Sahara Adoption and Fostering project , operated by IKL Associates and launched in 2005 is a unique model of service delivery working in partnetship across twelve local authorities. The projects aim is to promote and support the recruitment of Black and Minority Ethnic foster carers and adoptive parents on behalf of the local authorities.

The project recognises the national and local shortage of BME foster carers and adoptive parents and aims to enhance application numbers from the BME communities.

The project also provides a consultancy service to each local authority in their assessment of foster carers and adoptive parents and delivers training to both professional staff and carers.

The project has been successful in generating interest in adoption and fostering across the BME communities with a resultant increase in enquiries and applications.
